Little Lake to Port Severn

UP-STREAM Next lock Lock #8 Haigs Reach

This is the final leg of the Trent Severn Waterway northbound, or the beginning point for a southward voyage. The cruising narrative is written as you were headed downstream to Georgian Bay and begins at the Narrows S27 marker.

Port Severn

Day marker S25 is on the west tip of Gouette Island and marks the begins of Little Lake. Your course through Little Lake will pass between Green Island at mile 239 marked by S24, S23 then day marker's S21 & S19 on Green Island itself. S18 marks the down stream end of the Green Island area where you enter open Little Lake. The run across Little Lake is a just under 2 miles with red buoys S16 Barron Island & S14 to the south of the channel as you approach the west end of the lake.

The west end of Little Lake is the final approach to Port Severn and Lock 46 the last of the Trent Severn locks. Once past Calf Island at mile 239.9 the channel makes a sharp turn around red buoy S12 on the south with S13 on the north side.

Bush Marina

Leave day marker S11 to the north as you complete the sharp turn which brings you to Port Severn. You can't miss Severn Boat Haven on the point. Your course to the lock now turns back sharply west around Cowan Island marked by buoy S5. You can see the lock now.



Severn

The short course from Severn to Lock 45 runs parallel to the shore and has no obstructions to line of sight. There are rocks to the side of the channel so you should stay your corse as ther is a lot of traffic in this section. There is a safety cable in front of the spillways but it is not a play to play. Lock 45 forms the northern terminus of the Trent Severn Waterway and has one of the larger visitors centers with informational displays and information about the Waterway.

Lock 45 is located on an enhanced Island mid stream with a narrow channel to the west and the spillway pool to the SE. As you clear Sawmill Island you will need to be aware of the many small boats as well as cruisers due to the popular beach adjacent to the public launch ramp and docks. Port Severn has a wide selection of marina's and services for the transient. There is a public dock above and north west the lock with roughly 4' to 9' of depth dockside. The dock has an elevation of 2' a length of 100' and a width of 10'.

There is another public dock to the south west of the lock with depth of 6' to 11' and is 90' long. If you want to use the dock to the south west. CAUTION: as there is are rocks west of the dock that run parallel to it. you can just see the Inn at Christie's Mills in the background in the picture.

Port Severn marks the end of the Trent Severn Waterway. There are no marinas below the lock now with no less than 3 major marinas for sale here if one has the inkling.

Port Severn is very much connected to the waterway and has no banks and limited facilities . Sailboats will have to continue another 6 miles into Georgian Bay to Queen's Cove Marina located in Victoria Harbour for to step their masts.

The main street with grocery store and restaurants are on the SE shore which is a walk accross the dam and spillway if you use the public docks located to the west of the Lock. Bush's Boat Livery does offer temporary docking for those transients seeking to provision here.

Muskoka Joe's Grill

There are two easily accessable restaurants in town. There is Muskoka's Joes for the fast food lover or the Lock 45 Restaurant that is next door to the supermarket.

Lock 45

There is a short dock below the Lock which has space for a couple of boats to tie up. It is a short walk up the embankment and accross the road to the Lock washrooms and facilities. The water is swift flowing here and caution should be used if venturing out on the rocks below the wall.

The marina can be easily identified by the pristine white buildings with their blue and white stripped awnings. This is an excellent big boat choice with 12' of water in the entrance channel and at least 6' at the gas dock. The entire facility is well kept and upscale complete with a well stocked marine store that has a full range of goods not just parts or accessories.

Port Severn

Rawley Lodge does not offer transient berths, but does offer berth to Lodge guests and restaurant patrons while dining. It is located mid way between Severn Boat Haven and Bush's and has a dock that can accommodate vessels with 4' to 8' of draft. Because of this it is recommended that you call in advance if you are planning a stop for a meal as reservations are highly recommended.

If you are westbound, leaving the Waterway it is s short run from Severn Haven to the lock basin. Bush's Boat Livery and downtown are on the east shore the dam and spillway extend from Bush's to Lock 45.

Bush's is the closest marina to the lock, located directly accross the spillway channel. It is located next to the main street and has been operating for 100 years. There is a large Petro Canada sign on the dock and the stucco building. They do allow docking for boaters who wish to go to town for some shopping.

This is a good choice for the deep draft vessel with a full 15' of depth at the fuel dock and 8' in transient slips. The yard has a marine railway that can accommodate vessels of up to 30' and has 12 transient slips with 50 berths reserved for seasonal customers with water and 30 AMP power available..

Christie Mills The Inn at Christie's Mills

Lock 45 is to the NW side with the public docks a bit further to the west. mid streams you approach Lock 45 ahead and turning west you pass behind Sawmill Island curving around the point where The Inn at Christie's Mills is located. There are appropriate red and green markers to guide you from the Lock. There is a big Dock & dine sign visible form the water and a dinner at the Mill is a evening of pure enjoyment. The Lodge does not monitor VHF so you will have to go to the main desk to register.

Visitors who are on the waterway are encouraged to use the docks wile visiting the Lodge and enjoying its various restaurant and lounge.

Located in a bit of a bay after you pass the Inn is Severn Marina,south of Yellowhead Island Severn Marian can be identified by its Petro Canada sign and its blue buildings. Approaches have roughly 4' of draft and the channel is marked. Transients are asked to call for a reservation if requesting a berth. They have a marine store and chandlery with a full range of products and a class A mechanic on duty for repairs.

Driftwood Cove is a well kept marina with an on premise restaurant with many of the docks reserved for seasonal customers. They offer mooring while eating at the restaurant and have housekeeping rooms for any one with shore fever.
