Rice Lake South Shore

map showing the extent Rice LAke is blocked by bridge Remains

Rice Lake is largely blocked by the old bridge remains thus using the marked channel to cross is the only safe way.

CRITICAL CAUTION

If you have been ashore or are approaching from along the south shore in either direction REMEMBER THE CRIB BRIDGE REMAINS. To clear these dangerous remains you MUST proceed to almost mid lake, north of Tick Island before you can cross safely. T 429 marks the southern end of this channel and T 430 marks the north end.

The founding intent of the Cobourg Peterborough Railroad company was to provide a direct rail link from Cobourg to Peterborough across Rice Lake. Opening in 1855 after an epidemic of cholera, killing 14, it was never the height of engineering using cribs, they continually suffered ice damage until it closed in 1862.

The village of Harwood has all the signs of active improvement. The store forms a hub of recreational facilities. On the east shore of is Cedar Grove Resort (905) 342 3110

. This is another of the south shore summer cottage resorts which have something to offer many people. For the transient 3 feet and have some dockage with 15 amp power and water boat rentals, showers, store, picnic tables and a launch ramp.

Curtis Point Cottages can take care of pretty much any type of vacation rental. There is a camp ground, cottages, boats and equipment to rent. Moving around to the point of where the bridge terminated is Holiday Holme a private cottage rentals and some dockage with 3 feet and some with 15 amp power There are water boat rentals, showers,a store, picnic tables, and a launch ramp.

Leo's Boat Livery is on the old causeway to the north of Harwood proper before the government dock. There is a reported 8 feet of water with some dockage power, water, boat rentals, showers.

The government dock is at the northern tip of the old bridge abutments. There is reportedly 6 feet of water (which I would not guarantee) at the end and a portable toilette the extent of the facilities.

On the SW side of the old bridge remains ,0.8 miles west of Harwood, is Lakeview Resort which provides dockage, repairs, service, rentals, power, water, boat rentals, showers, store, picnic tables and a launch ramp.

Close Point

Almost south of the river entrance is Close Point which is an upscale set of residences set upon a isthmus connected by a causeway. There is a shallow bay formed to the west of the causeway which might offer an anchorage if you don't mind peoples back yards.

Gore Landing

With Tick Island and the bridge out of the way you can leave the three islands mid lake to your north and explore Gores Landing.

Victoria Inn

I dont have the history at this time, but these have to be some of the first developed marinas on the lake. This small bay on the south shore hosts Gores Landing with a long established set of marinas and the delightful Victoria Inn. Each of them has something different for the summer vacationers.

Gores Landing was named for Thomas Gore who settled here in mid 1840's. It had a brief hay day in the late 40's as a point on the Cobourg Rice Lake plank Road.

Marina Info

Starting form the east shore you will find the (6) Victoria Inn (905) 3432 2138 set back on the hill with it's distinctive tower room. Gerald Sinclair Hayward the miniature artist once lived here calling it the Willows. Today it is an upscale Inn with fine dining and accommodation. Although the Inn has a small dock for guests there is inadequate water for most cruising boats.

If you have a bigger boat and would like to check out the Victoria Inn try (5) Audley's Cove Marina (905) 3432 2138 the next marina to the east can handle vessels up to 60 feet with 15 or 30 amp power on a transient basis.

Audly Marina

The centre of the covered slips on the south side of the bay is (4) Pratt's Landing. This is a seasonal marina with the slips taken yearly and little for the transient boater. Gores Landing Store has all the basics including a pay phone out front and Canada Post Office inside.

Plank Road Cottages Marina

In the south west corner of the bay you find the interesting Gores Landing Marina (3) . The dockage arrangement allows for narrow overpasses to allow day boats to reach the inner slips. The trailer park is fairly open with a good number of longer term summer residents and is probably a lot of fun in the summer.

Plank Road Cottages & Marina

Turning the corner on the west side are the Plank Road Cottages and Marina Plank Road Cottages website(905) 342 5555. From the water you don't see much but the covered slips and shops. There are 11 neat little cottages nestled among the trees ashore. The 7 food depth along side the gas dock and 5 available transient spaces make it attractive. Facilities are 15 amp, water, showers,BBQ's, beach, e-mail pickup, and playground

The end of the line is the government wharf which extends from the western tip of the bay. There are reported depths of 4 feet with perhaps 3 on the east side of it.

Harris Boat Works (905) 342 2153 has been around since 1947 and is .375 mile to the west of the government wharf. On approach you can see the long concrete break wall which projects into the lake .The blue building with white trim stands at the end of the docks. Harris has 75 slips available for both transients and the seasonal boater.Harris does a full range of professional marine repairs .

Headed west six and a half miles along the south shore of Rice Lake the next point is Halstead Beach which has nothing but summer cottages and boat rentals. As we work our way west at he extreme west end of the lake is Bewdley. Bewdley has a number of facilities for the boater.

Furthest south on the Bewdley strip is Captains Marina and Sport Rentals (905) 797 2877 which offers rental boats ranging from a peddle boat to a small outboard for fishing. The staff say that they have had forty footers in there but if you are one of those you should call first.

There is a free concrete public wharf that belongs to the township when a transient can tie up with no frills. There are a couple of pub style eateries here if you want a little shore leave. For a more lively crowd there is Rhino's Roadhouses across the street and has all the appropriate pub amenities and food.

However we have yet to check the water depth docksides. then to the north of the township dock are Heartland Marina (905) 797 2790. You can't miss the big blue building and Heartland Gas sign. Of the 30 slips 6 are set aside for transients of less than 45 feet, as 6 foot depths are reported at the gas dock and slips.

BJ Tackle (905) 797 2632 in the north west corner just past the township launch ramp also has 30 slips with 5 available to those less than 35 feet with a reported 7 foot depth. The same folk have Britt's Bar and Grill with docking at BJ's.

North Shore Rice Lake

From Bewdley east along the north shore, all the way to Halls Landing there is nothing for the non locals. There are the now familiar cottage resorts and small fish boats. You are nearing the mouth of the Otonobee River entrance before you reach Halls Landing. Southview Cottages (705) 939 6761 which does offer transient dockage with very good depth. Service facilities are limited to 15 amp power and potable water at the head of the dock.
